Is CBD a panacea?
In medicine, the hemp plant has been used for a long time in its various forms of processing (z.b.used as hemp oil, CBD). Medical cannabis can even be purchased legally in Germany since 2017.
In the trade, consumers also find cannabinoids that are freely available for sale. One of them is the cannabidiol, which is abbreviated as CBD. It is extracted from the female hemp plant.
It is said to have a variety of positive effects, for example, in disease patterns such as multiple sclerosis or psychosis. The well-being of patients with chronic pain should also benefit significantly from the application.
CBD does not have a psychoactive effect, which is why it is not affected by the current narcotics law. Particularly popular is the use in the form of drops, oils or cosmetics. Learn more about the effects of cannabidiol here.
What is the legal situation?
CBD is not to be confused with the psychoactive THC. If CBD products contain more than 0.2 percent THC, they are even no longer legal to purchase. Furthermore, the extraction of THC, private cultivation, trade and possession of cannabis is illegal in Germany.
However, if the limit value regarding THC is respected, the sale of cannabinoids is legal. However, it is not allowed to advertise the CBD as a cure or medicine, because in this case it would require a prescription.
Therefore, the products are usually sold as dietary supplements.
The hype around CBD
In advertising, CBD products are often exaggerated as true miracle cures. However, this does not mean that there are no effects at all.
Consumers should not expect, however, that wounds disappear in a few seconds by the cannabidiol, the aging process is completely stopped or cancer is cured.
However, there are already many different studies that have scientifically proven at least certain effects of cannabinoids.
In animal studies, for example, CBD was shown to help speed the healing of bone fractures in rats. This phenomenon has not yet been demonstrated in humans.
Nevertheless, scientists have already been able to prove other positive effects on humans. Thus, CBD is believed to have a positive effect on the following diseases and conditions:
- Chronic pain,
- Cancer (viability, growth and proliferation of tumor cells are restricted),
- Alzheimer’s disease (degenerative brain processes are slowed down),
- Multiple sclerosis (relief of spastic paralysis, depression, incontinence, fatigue, and pain),
- Epilepsy,
- Schizophrenia (regulation of perceptual disorders),
- Depression (increasing motivation),
- Autism,
- Inflammation.
Currently, however, numerous other studies are underway to investigate which diseases can also be positively affected by the use of cannabis. In medicine, CBD oil is increasingly used for Parkinson’s disease, rheumatism, migraine, ADHD and fibromyalgia.
For these diseases, however, it has not yet been proven beyond doubt whether CBD can actually be attributed a healing or alleviating effect.
However, these explanations show that the hype around the ingredient of the hemp plant is quite justified. Consumers are well advised to be realistic in their expectations of CBD.
Finally, the marketing departments of the respective companies also know about the hype and use it for their purposes.
Conclusion
CBD is certainly not a miracle drug, yet its positive effects in various areas can hardly be denied.
